Welcome to Spelthorne U3A

As we move into 2021 it is still impossible to predict how soon we will be able to resume face to face meetings and Zoom remains the only alternative. We are organising monthly Zoom meetings in place of our regular General Meetings and some of our groups have been able to meet in this way. Further information will be posted on this site when the situation becomes clearer

Spelthorne U3A (SU3A) began in 1997 with a membership of 130 and after a few years this had grown to over 500. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2017 by holding a very successful Open Day with displays giving a good representation of the numerous groups and activities available to our members.

SU3A is made up of people who are no longer in full time employment but there are no lower or upper age limits. Meetings are usually held in the mornings or afternoons at venues in all parts of Spelthorne (mainly Staines, Ashford, Laleham and Sunbury). The objective of the U3A movement is to learn together in a relaxed environment – there are no qualifications or exams. There are no professional tutors - the group leaders are drawn from the membership (the idea being that we all learn from each other)

We have a General Meeting at the Salvation Army Citadel, Woodthorpe Road, Ashford TW15 3JY, usually on the last Monday of each month starting at 1.45pm. A list of dates for the current year can be found on the EVENTS page. At these meetings there is generally a speaker followed by an interlude for tea and biscuits where members can socialise, make contact with group leaders and sign up for various events which have been announced.

Click on the GROUPS box to see a list of our special interest groups. It is possible that your preferred group may already be full but it is, however, our normal endeavour to create new groups to meet members' requirements whenever possible. Smaller groups usually meet in members’ houses but larger premises are hired if the numbers indicate the need.

Spelthorne has a second U3A (Spelthorne K2) - a number of the groups are shared and have members from both U3As.

We welcome new members and you are cordially invited to come to one of our General Meetings to see what we are like and how we operate. Dates of these meetings can be found on the EVENTS page. If you wish to know more, please send your address by clicking on CONTACT in the bar above and then the Membership Enquiries button in the Contact page and you will be sent a welcome pack which includes an application form. Annual membership is £15 as from January 2016.
