Bakewell Area

Walking

Bakewell U3A runs six walking groups, each of which has a walk every month. They vary in length from 3-4 miles to 10 miles (up to 12 in the summer), and in degrees of difficulty from a gentle stroll to a vigorous hike with stiles, steep ascents and underfoot conditions to challenge the fittest of our members. We have recently introduced an hour's stroll on the flat to encourage those wishing to return to walking, and who may need to regain some confidence.

We have pub lunches, picnic lunches, café lunches, either during or after the walk depending on its length. We have an annual holiday in another beautiful part of the country and a Christmas party. We walk, chat, laugh, share. We take it in turns to lead the walks so they are varied and interesting. Each leader will send out an invitation about a week before the walk, with details of where to meet, length of walk, degree of difficulty and whether the walkers need to bring, for example, a stick to beat nettles or provide assistance on a slippery path.

So what’s not to like? If you are already a BU3A member and would like a walk, have a close look at the centre pages of the Gazette. I am sure you will find something to suit you. The details of the walk organisers and leaders are there. If you aren’t sure the walk is suitable, give the organiser a call. Don’t be shy. Give it a try. We love new members! And if you are not a BU3A member, what are you waiting for?

And if you fancy a spot of bird watching with your walk, contact me, and I’ll add you to the list of recipients of regular birding walk updates.

Finally we recently ran a very successful and enjoyable Nordic walking session. Nordic walking takes the strain off your joints, makes hills (both up and down) easier and is a good aerobic workout of you just have a short time to exercise. If you would like to know more, drop me a line.

Hope to see you
